I get the idea that Volkswagen is trying to say their cars are so cool that instead of playing the classic punch buggy game (in which you get to punch someone you’re with whenever you see a VW Beetle–also called Bug–and call out the color). Call me old fashioned though, but I just can’t get behind that. THOSE AREN’T THE RULES! More importantly I worry about the increase in violence that will sweep the country if this new game does catch on. I mean, there aren’t that many VW Bugs out there in the world (relatively speaking to the number of people and where they might be to your particular area, for instance, you’re not going to see any cars in New Mexico if you live in New Jersey), but there are tons of Volkswagens out there. It could be an epidemic! Also, if waitresses start punching me, there goes their tip. And don’t bus drivers have it rough enough without getting slugged by a punk kid every time he passes a German auto?
On the other hand, I do find this commercial chuckleworthy, especially in three parts. 1) When the kid punches the old man in the junk, 2) when the one Amish guy punches the other and 3) the Tracy Morgan gets punched by Stevie Wonder. Sure they’re pretty easy jokes, but I am a fan of easy.
The fact that Volkswagen has been ignoring the rules drives me batty every time I see the commercial, particularly as I don’t think I’ve even seen an actual Volkswagen “bug” in any of them!
Apparently, production of new Beetles stops this year.
