The High Five Podcast Episode 17 – Lost Screenplays Adapted As Comics

On today’s episode, I’m running through a quintet of fabulous comic books that adapt unfilmed screenplays of somewhat historical significance. They also happen to be super fun reads.

I read the Things from Another World interview with Phil Hester and Jonathan Lau here.

If you’re curious about the novelization of William Gibson’s Aliens 3 script, here’s the Amazon link.

In addition to the intro penned by William Gibson, I also read this Wayback Machine archived blog post he wrote.

If you have Marvel Unlimited, check out The Star Wars here. You can watch Empire Of Dreams on Disney+!

Here you can see the official Jim Henson Company clip about Time Piece. If anyone knows where I can see the full version and/or The Cube, let me know.

I refer to this Ramon K Perez CBR interview conducted by my pal Steve Sunu!

The High Five Episode 5 – The Kids’ Favorite Shows Of 2020

On this week’s High Five Podcast I’m joined by not one, but two very special guests: my kids! On this one, the three of us discuss our favorite TV show watching experiences of last year. It might sound a little funky because it was recorded differently than the others, but I hope you’ll enjoy our takes on some of the best shows for families around!

The High Five Episode 4 – Five Incredible Black Comic Creators

On this week, I’m celebrating Black History Month by running down five of my all time favorite black comic creators. This was a delightful trip down memory lane, but also a great look at some of the greatest comic writers and artists around. I hope you enjoy it!

If you’re interested in the links I mentioned in the episode, here’s the CBR interview I did about Goldie Vance. If you want to find out more about McDuffie being let go from Justice League of America, you can read the initial Lying In The Gutters column here and then the news itself about him being ousted here. Finally, enjoy a few pics I snapped while putting this episode together including the fantastic Kyle Rayner sketch Darryl Banks did for me!

The High Five Podcast Episode 2 – Body Swaps

I threw all my plans out the window when I got a very cool package in the mail from a cool PR person! As a result, you’ll have to wait to find out more of my favorite 2020 film experiences and instead dive into my all-time favorite body swap stories from TV, animation, movies and comics!

Halloween Scene: My Horror Toys Part 2

Last week, I showed you all a detailed view of half of the mostly-monsters toys I lined up in my office this year to get into the Halloween spirit. The first batch included a Masters Of The Universe Classics giant, one of Jack Kirby’s hottest creations, Buffy, a trio of Stranger Things characters, my guy Beetlejuice, a pair of Hellboys and horror icons like Frankenstein’s Monster, Freddy Krueger and Pinhead! Want to see who else made the cut [cue cleaver chopping sound effect]?

Enter, if you dare…

Halloween Scene: My Horror Toys Part 1

To say that this Halloween season will be unlike any other is like saying that Leatherface has a unique take on cosmetics. My wife and I are still taking the pandemic seriously (it’s incredibly stupid that anyone has to say that, wear a damn mask) so trick or treating for the kids is all but cancelled. We’re trying to figure out a new way to celebrate, but we’ll see how that goes. Personally, this year will be very different for me because I’ve got a house full of people who want nothing to do with horror movies (or are too young to see them). So, I’m doing my best to squeeze them in where and when I can, but am also focusing on a lot of comics and books. But, I also decided to decorate the shelf in my office with a small army of fiends in action figure form that date all the way back to my childhood!

My Favorite Traditional TV Experiences Of 2019

A few years back, my wife and I decided to get rid of cable. With that, we signed up for Hulu Live or whatever it’s called so we could keep watching Jeopardy and I could enjoy football and basketball. So, we’ve got that streaming service as well as Amazon Video and Netflix. And yet, we still find ourselves watching quite a bit of traditional television. These are the weekly shows we do our best to keep up with!

Bumblebee Is Exactly The Transformers Movie I Was Hoping For

As a kid in the 80s, I loved the Transformers. Like many of my compatriots, I could not get enough of giant robots or things that morphed making it both the perfect cartoon and toy line for me. I wasn’t a diehard fan (I only know the names of a few of the Autobots and Decepticons) but it was a big part of my youth. I even have a Transformers sleeping bag that my son now uses!

So, I was pretty excited to watch the Transformers film in 2007. And you know what? I dug it! This was before coming to understand how problematic and awful certain aspects of that production and its director were, so I found myself enthralled with this tale of giant robots fighting each other with surprisingly durable humans running around. It certainly helped that they used the few Transformers I can name from memory AND some of the sound effects from the cartoon! With the second film in the series, I found myself no longer having fun and stayed away, that is until watching Bumblebee with my wife!

My Favorite Things This Week: Arrow, Crimson Peak & More!

Not a day goes by that I don’t think,”Gee, I should blog about this thing I just read, watched or saw that I really dig.” For me the reason for this blog is two-fold. First, I want to let people know about cool things that they might also enjoy. The second is as a kind of pop culture digital back-up memory. With both goals in mind, I think I’ll take to this format of quick hits every week (maybe, we’ll see).
