The High Five Podcast Episode 26 – Rebel Girls With Dr. Elizabeth Keenan-Penagos Part 2

On this week’s episode, I continue chatting with author and music professor Dr. Elizabeth Keenan-Penagos. In the first part, which you should definitely listen to, we got into the characters and setting of her 2019 YA novel Rebel Girls. In this one, we dig further into the pop culture that fuels the book including Athena’s love of Bikini Kill’s Revolution Girl Style Now tape, Shaun’s affinity for Spider-Man and our own love of David Lynch! I hope you enjoy part two of our talk from the end of last summer!

I put together a lengthy Spotify playlist based on Elizabeth’s suggestion, you can check that out here. You can follow Elizabeth on Instagram and Twitter and also keep an eye on her website, ElizabethKeenanWrites.com! You can email me at high5tj at gmail.com or follow me on Twitter and Instagram. Oh and here’s a video of Bikini Kill performing “Rebel Girl” from the Tubes for good measure:

My New Favorite Things: Charley Varrick, Twin Peaks Season 1 & Archer & Armstrong

I’ve been flying solo with the little dude for about a full week at this point while my folks are out of town. I haven’t had as much time to dive into awesome stuff as usual, but over the past few weeks, I have been diving into some goodness I want to talk about! Casting Internets

Whew, it’s been a busy day today you guys. Since nothing was on TV that I wanted to warp my brain with while working on freelance, I went to Panera, got some soup and a coffee and banged out a few things. Right in the middle of a thought, though, the fire alarm went off and I had to leave (as did anyone in the entire strip mall). So, blame fake arson for my lack of posting today. And of course, when you’re busy, that’s when all the cool stuff pops up online.

Cool stuff like Sam’s casting call for one of the greatest comic series’ of all time Sleeper, which is not coincidetnally written by one of my favorite writers Ed Brubaker. Hollywood, hire her immediately as a casting agent. Seriously.

Meanwhile, my other buddy Chris Ward of World of Ward Crap created this delightful Lady Galaga mach-up that combines the campiness of Lady Gaga and, obviously, Galaga. He’s like a ninja with that Photoshop stuff.

I’m a big Ramones fan, so this piece that popped up over on the Autumn Society blog is right up my alley. Good stuff. If you’re in the Philly area, check out the art show at Creep Records on December 12th from 6-10.

Heh, check it out, the Pitstop Motorsport guys made a Predator motorcycle. I like me some Predator, but this might be overkill. Still cool though. It should definitely be included in the next movie though. (via Super Punch)

Looks like I’m not the only one getting in the Christmas spirit as the gang over at Cave Drawing Ink has started counting down their top 10 favorite Christmas movies. They did something similar around Halloween with a new sketch each day for 10 days. The first one is the Abominable Snowman from Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer by Sev Eaton. I highly recommend subscribing to their RSS feed so you don’t miss the other 9 entries.

And finally, this video of David Lynch talking about him meeting with George Lucas back when he was a contender for directing Return Of The Jedi made the rounds today and you’ve probably already seen it (after I saw it on /Film first, it was then on every other site imaginable, now it’s on this one :). As a fan of both Star Wars and Lynch’s weird-ass movies I found this pretty interesting. So if you haven’t already seen it, give it a peep.
