If you were hoping that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass would re-team for the fifth Bourne movie, Universal’s got some news for you: not happening. After TwitchFilm reported that the Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy and Bourne Ultimatum duo were in talks with Universal to return to the franchise, the studio came right out and told Variety that there’s “no truth” to the rumor.
Sounds like a pretty done deal then, right? Well, Twitch updated their original post with “we remain very confident in our sources.”
The fifth Bourne film, which doesn’t yet have an official title, is being written by Sherlock Holmes’ Anthony Peckham and presumably focuses on Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross character as introduced in The Bourne Legacy.
For the second week in a row, an action film won the box office. Two weekends back it was The Wolverine, last week it was 2 Guns! Congrats all around!
Speaking of action films making money, THR pointed out that G.I. Joe: Retaliation topped home video sales after premiering last week.
If you want to check out 33 images from Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium featuring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, head on over to Hero Complex.
Like most of the Hollywood news sites out there, Deadline reported that Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks have pulled out of adapting Navy Seal Chris Kyle’s American Sniper for the big screen.
The other day, Sylvester Stallone announced that Harrison Ford would be replacing Bruce Willis in The Expendables 3. THR reports a rumor that Willis wouldn’t agree to shoot for four days in Bulgaria for $3 million (he wanted another mill apparently). We guess this is what Sly meant when he said “GREEDY AND LAZY …… A SURE FORMULA FOR CAREER FAILURE”
Finally, in news that’s not surprising to anyone, 300: Rise Of An Empire, the navally oriented sequel to 300, got an R-rating from the MPAA. [via SHH]
Universal’s not letting filmgoers forget The Bourne Legacy. Deadline reports that the studio snagged Invictus and Sherlock Holmes screenwriter Anthony Peckham to work on the currently-untitled fifth film in the franchise. With Matt Damon not returning for Legacy, the franchise switched gears, revealing that the government didn’t put all their eggs in the Jason Bourne basket. They also had chemically and biologically altered super soldier Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) in the works who was going on his own adventures.
The film, like the previous Bourne flicks, is based on the ideas of writer Robert Ludlum who passed away in 2001. Renner is expected to return, but it’s currently unclear if Legacy director Tony Gilroy (Duplicity, Michael Clayton) is coming back as well.
Neill Blomkamp blew us away with what he could do with a small budget and actors who aren’t super well known in District 9, . Now he’s got Elysium coming from Sony starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and William Fichtner. The film finds Damon’s character getting a cybernetic enhancement surgically grafted to his body in order to make his way to Elysium, the floating city where the rich live above the rank and file dregs of humanity. The recently revealed scene finds Damon in a firefight with one of Fichtner’s robots, which doesn’t end well for the ‘bot cop. Just from this clip, it’s clear that Blomkamp hasn’t lost his touch for bringing the surreal to life on screen and making it look awesome.
Elysium opens Aug. 9.
