We Want Action: The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

After realizing that the Fast & Furious movies are the best superhero films around, I’ve developed a new appreciation for Vin Diesel. He’s not the best actor in the world, but he’s pretty damn good at doing his thing (knowing looks, confidence, being huge, driving cars, saying “I am Groot,” etc). With that in mind — as well as a few How Did This Get Made? episodes focusing on his films — I decided to give The Last Witch Hunter a watch. I remember hearing exactly nothing about this one when it came out and you know what? I kinda liked it a lot. Continue reading We Want Action: The Last Witch Hunter (2015)

Mattel’s Fast & Furious Toys Are Rad!

Having had about another week of time with these toys, I can say that all of them — even the larger ones — are absolutely super fun. My kids keep wandering over and playing with the smaller versions as well as the larger ones. To be honest, I also find myself launching cars through the mountain terrain. Now I’ve got to see the new film!

Dwayne Johnson Is Awesome Part 1 (of Infinity)

furious 6As you can tell, I haven’t been blogging much lately. My days are filled with work, kids and house stuff, so I don’t have as much time to sit back down behind the computer and write out my thoughts on important things like movies and comics, but I’ve been lucky enough to see and read a lot of cool stuff lately and want to remember that.

So, let’s start with the trio of Dwayne Johnson movies I’ve seen recently. A few weeks back, unbeknownst to us we had a free trial of HBO. For a night, I thought we’d had the thing since we moved in six months ago and I’d just missed it, but the disappearance of the channels the next day revealed the truth. Still, I was able to take advantage and watch Justin Lin’s Furious 6.

I’m actually not very up on the Fast & Furious movies. I saw the first in the theaters way back in 2001, but I preferred the previous year’s Gone In 60 Seconds. Since then this series produced a few sequels that kept the motor running until it really kicked into gear in the past few installments. In a lot of ways, these movies have taken on a kind of comic book nature. The last three films have drawn from the previous ones as far as characters go and also, as Paul Scheer said on the episode of How Did This Get Made dedicated to the movie, they’re basically superheroes at this point who can’t die (or mostly can’t die). Bullet Points: Hot Rounds Of Information Goodness

Finally, Jeff Bridges opened up a bit about the failure of R.I.P.D., one of Universal’s few flops in recent memory. “I had such a great time working on that movie,” Bridges said. “I remember what we were doing. I thought: This could be fun to see. And when I saw it, I was a little underwhelmed. For my mind, the studio made some, uh, choices that I wouldn’t have made.” [via GQ]

Vin Diesel & David Twohy Shine Some Light On Riddick

Earlier this week Katee Sackhoff talked about how much pressure she feels about her role in Riddick. Now you can check out star Vin Diesel and director David Twohy talking about their vision for the third film in the sci-fi trilogy along with Pitch Black and The Chronicles Of Riddick.

Want more info? Here’s the official synopsis:

The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.

Riddick also stars  David Bautista, Jordi Mollà, Matt Nable, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo and Karl Urban. The film opens September 6th.

Katee Sackhoff “Incredibly Nervous” About Riddick

katee sackhoff riddick-1 Katee Sackhoff’s feeling a lot of pressure these days. The actress known for starring on Battlestar Galactica and currently appearing in A&E’s Longmire is looking at Riddick, her next big screen outing, as a huge opportunity as she said to Collider earlier this week.

“There’s still a large majority of the population that doesn’t know what Battlestar Galactica is and hasn’t seen it, so this is the first time a lot of people are going to see me play this type of character,” the actress said. “When you have the large majority of the estrogen quota sitting on your shoulders in a movie, it’s a big task. I joke that it’s not like someone is gonna walk away from the movie and say, ‘The girl was bad,’ and someone is gonna go, ‘Which one?’ My fingers are crossed that it’s going to be really, really great, but I’m incredibly nervous. But, I was this nervous when Battlestar came out.  I tested and auditioned for this role in stiletto heels. They cast me in stilettos. That’s who I am. So, to then shift my personality so much and become these strong characters is interesting. It’s always interesting how people are going to perceive it.”

Here’s the film’s RED BAND (read: NSFW) trailer featuring Sackhoff:

When asked about appearing on the Women Who Kick Ass panel and whether that made her feel more comfortable in her role as an action star, Sackhoff said: “100%, yeah. That was a great day. It was a great day for Comic-Con, and it was a great day for women in film and women in action. And I applaud Entertainment Weekly for doing that panel because it is a great panel. As a little girl growing up, this is who I wanted to be, as far as my career is concerned. To have it be validated is a really great thing. I’m sure if everyone on that panel had it up to them, there would be hundreds of millions of strong little girls running around, not taking any shit.”

Riddick, the third film in the Vin Diesel-starring, David Twohy-directed trilogy, opens on September 6th. Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
