New Hampshire Haul

Last weekend the missus and I traveled to New Hampshire so she could go to a family bridal shower with her mom. It was nice to go someplace different, especially a much cooler place. Anyway, we hit up a deep discount place called Building 19 and also the Londonderry Flea Market…twice and I got all kinds of rad stuff.

First off, I want to give you an idea of what Building 19 is like. In addition to having tons of clothes, books and whatever else you might want, you can also buy prison shoes for $2.99.These aren’t really my thing, but there’s plenty to choose from in both blue and white. The Building, as those in the know call it, also does hand drawn circulars in the paper every Sunday along with signs that hang in the store, like this one that I took a picture of on a previous visit. Anyway, I like the building because of it’s great selection of cheap books, which I always spend the bulk of my time there perusing through. I almost never buy a book there that I’ve heard of, but something that sounds interesting or has a cover that draws me in. American Gangster by Mark Jacobson contains stories that inspired the movie that I haven’t seen, but I love mob stories, so that should be fun. Not Remotely Controlled by Lee Siegel is a book full of TV criticism and essays, I haven’t heard of the author, but I love TV, so it was an easy buy for a buck. And finally, I’ve heard good things about Chuck Klosterman, so when I saw an audio book version of IV on the cheap, I figured it’d be a good place to start, that won’t interfere with my now-daunting summer reading list. The next day, while the missus and her mom were at the shower, her dad and I went to the flea market, where I found a guy selling CDs for $4 or 10 for $20. It was about the second table I saw and I spent most of my time there. I walked away with Zwan’s only record (not pictured), The Highwaymen’s Highwayman, Jay-Z’s Vol. 2, Genesis’ ABACAB, Beck’s Steropathetic Soul Manure, The Black Eyed Peas’ Monkey Business, Eric Clapton’s 461 Ocean Boulevard, Public Enemy’s Fear Of A Black Planet, Tom Petty’s Highway Companion and Echo & The Bunnymen’s self titled record. This lot is a good combination of getting more albums by bands I like (PE, Jay-Z, Petty), trying new things (Echo, Genesis, solo Clapton), getting some Supergroup Showcase fodder (Highwaymen and Zwan) and also getting the song “My Humps.”The next day, after breakfast, we ended up back at the same flea market. I was worried I’d be bored, having skimmed all the other tables the previous day, but, to my surprise, there were a lot more people there selling stuff. I almost bought a 12-inch Admiral Ackbar for funsies along with what might have been a full set of Dick Tracy trading cards, but instead I walked away with four Nirvana bootleg tapes for a buck. They are (clockwise from top right) Live at the Hollywood Rock Festival in Argentina on January 23 ’93, New Years Eve in Oakland ’93, the 1992 Redding Festival and Live in Europe 1991 with performances from Rome on Novemeber 19th and Rotterdam on September 1st. So far I’ve only watched the Redding tape because it made it sound like the whole concert with performances by Smashing Pumpkins, Public Enemy, Pavement and Mudhoney would be on there, but instead it’s just Nirvana’s performance and then a full Cure show. I figure I’ll toss the ones that suck or aren’t interesting and then convert the ones I like to DVD for further viewing.

So, all in all, it was a pretty good trip, by which I mean that I accrued even more crap to clutter my house and also blog about, so I’m a happy camper.
