Roseanne Comics Cavalcade: Milk & Cheese

Long before geek was the new buzzword and Joss Whedon was dubbed king of those buzzworthy geeks, he was a story editor and writer on Roseanne and infused the show with plenty of comic book references. The basement room that belonged first to Darlene and later David was covered in posters of everything from The Golden Age and Sandman to Anima and The Return Of The Supermen. I’ve been watching a lot of Roseanne reruns lately and have been really impressed with how good the show is, and also reminded of how many comic references got snuck in. I loved trying to spot these as a young comic fan in the early 90s and I’m loving it even more now that I’ve got a better working knowledge of comics. For instance, 10 year old me probably wouldn’t have noticed this Milk & Cheese T-shirt David was sporting in an episode I saw the other night. I can’t remember exactly which episode it was in, but it was somewhere around episodes 21 and 24 of season 6 from 1994.

I’d like to get all the seasons on DVD, but we’ll see about that. In the meantime, I’m planning on getting some of the DVDs from 1992-1995 and taking comic-related screencaps. Hopefully, I can keep this going for a while. We shall see as it might take a little while to get past all the Christmas movies in my queue.

  1. He also wears one in season 5 episode 6. A different one, too.
I also realized this post was ten years old, sorry!
